There’s Still Hope for Intelligent Moms

there still hope for intelligent mums

So the kids are off to school or back at nursery, so what’s next?  Maybe you are, like me, a Mom who has found that getting back to work after having children isn’t easy. No I’m not talking about baby brain, although that definitely never goes away. I read that somewhere. I’m talking about finding work.

Sometimes I wish that someone had said to me, when I chose my career, ‘make sure you do something you can do part time or from home’. But I think that person would have been sentenced to politically correct prison. And rightly so, because we should all be allowed to choose what we want to do. Yeah, high five!

But having said that, I would have made different decisions if I could look back at my 18 year old self. I guess we can all say that!

So what am I talking about?

I just think it’s shameful that today that there of hundreds of thousands of Moms out there, all intelligent women, all who had fantastic grade A jobs, and then they had kids. And then everything changed. I know a lot of Moms in this situation personally.

So now what do they do, when it’s time to go back to work and they need to do something they enjoy, that they can get fulfilment from, something that pays well. But their precious satisfying job needs them there full time and they don’t want to… Getting home at 7 every night to say goodnight to the kids. It’s a really hard option.

And of course we all want the best of both worlds.

We can have it all can’t we?

What are the options?

So it’s impossible to go back to your old career for anything other than 5 days a week and you just don’t want to do this. Maybe some lucky people can do it in four, but even in this case, you are picking up emails, and answering calls on the 5th day.

And not getting paid. Hmmm.

So you look for part time work.

Generally, through my countless searches, part time work comes in 2 forms: The low paid admin or supermarket roles. (don’t get me wrong I am not turning my nose up at these – I just couldn’t get one myself) which were few and far between and completely oversubscribed by people who have previous experience. Or the ‘own your own business roles’.

So I decided to look into these.

Surely owning your own business means you can work when you want. Even if you don’t earn much it might still be enough until the kids are at school when working more hours in your former career is more acceptable.

What opportunities are there?

bored-woman-working-from-homeWell there are loads and loads.

It depends what sort of thing you want.

Some businesses are purely online, so they work globally (der of course) and some actually.

There is a whole raft of work from home opportunities and sometimes it’s hard to see the wood from the trees. What is a scam, what is not, what will cost you money, what will earn you so little money it’s not worth it.

There had to be a way, I thought, to earn great money part time, do something that is stimulating, that can be your own, but that is worthwhile. So that brain doesn’t completely turn to mush..

So I looked into a zillion ‘opportunities’. I have spent HOURS, quite  literally. And I have tried some things and wasted money on others, a lot.

The conclusions I have come to on some are that they either pay so little it isn’t worth the time, the work is so mundane, I might as well literally be drawing the money by hand myself… Or they are complete scams with over inflated promises of untold wealth.

I am very suspicious of earning £20,000 a month in the first month. In fact one company I spoke to on the phone and she asked me how much I wanted to earn that year. That’s a ridiculous question. Millions I said. She said that was possible. I put the phone down, with a huff of course.

And the worst ones as far as I am concerned are the ones when you have to invite your friends round and make them feel so awkward that they have to buy some rubbish overpriced products from you or make excuses about money being tight with the kids’ after school clubs etc.  AWKWARD!

Anyway I won’t go into each of these business ‘opportunities’ now, this would make this article enormous. You can see some of my reviews of these right here.

So what now?

But I did find one, which was the last one I looked into and I can say hand on heart, the last one I ever look into.

I had never heard of it before, and it was actually reading about Empower Network that led me to them. They are called Wealthy Affiliate, and everything I read made sense.

Having been around the houses with all these different work from home ‘opportunities’, I felt I could spot a good one when I saw it. And the best thing is that you can try for FREE. Anyway, I have created a whole review on this program which you can see here.

So there is light…

So what I wanted to say to all you Moms out there who feel trapped in a choice of a world of mundane or a world without your children, is that you are not the only one, and there is hope

Check out my review and see if Wealthy Affiliate is for you. All I can say is that it has changed my life, and I know I will go on to do great things with it. And most importantly I love it. I hope it can help you too.

Hi, I totally get where you are comming from looking for work after having kids. I just started working with WA myself and I must say it has been an eye opener. With so many scammers out there it is refreshing to see an honest opinion and a realistic aproach as to how you can make money online. I would definately recommend WA to anyone looking to understand internet money making better.

    Hi Ruth,
that’s a nice post. I like your honest approach amd the way you start by telling us of your own experience not finding it easy to go back to the job world after your kids came. You especially make it very practical when you talk about having to get home at 7 to say goodnight to the kids. Pretty the same predicament for so many of us.
Legit online opportunities are good even for men as when successfully done they bring in so much freedom to be with familt and offer guidance to the kids as they grow.

I think not only women can benefit from this article, but pretty much anyone who hates working in the corporate world. I do like seeing the perspectives of moms who sacrificed their career paths in order to take care of the kids. It can certainly relate to a lot of other moms, I’m sure.

But yeah, all those MLM companies and pyramid schemes I just find are very difficult. Some may be legitimate but very hard to actually make money. Good to see more promotions about WA. They are good!

Great post Ruth and you really highlighted the great opportunity for mothers who have just had children and won’t be going back to work anytime soon!

I would have loved to see your reactions as you were going through all the different opportunities online as there is a few dodgy one alright but as a member of Wealthy Affiliate myself I can completely agree with you on the value it offers for anyone looking to get started online.

The fact that it’s free to get started makes it a no brainer!

    Cheers, Stephen

Absolutely, thats the main reason why I tried it, once I was in, I was hooked! That’s all it takes! It can be so easy to buy into various sale pitches, some of them are really good, and before you know it you are swallowed up by upsells. At wealthy affiliate, if you like it, you can buy a premium membership, and that is it, no more costs. Done!

I had to have a giggle at your post. I can relate.

I am also a member of WA and it is definitely the best online business I have come accross.

Yep I have tried some of the things you mentioned in my time, like envelope stuffing, selling beauty products and MLM – the pressure and the income are just not worth all the trouble.

At least with WA you can earn from something you actually enjoy doing.

    • Ruth says:

Absolutely! There is so much to learn at Wealthy Affiliate, and anyone can do it, from a beginner to an expert. Good luck with your business !

I forgot to ask as well, If I already have a business idea already can this work on Wealthy Affiliate? I would like to focus on beer brewing and build a website on this and sell equipment, and brewing kits and ideas to customers, and just to write about something I love. Can I work on this within Wealthy Affiliate?

    • Ruth Maisey says:

Most definitely! Wealthy Affiliate allows you to build your online business from scratch whatever it is. You get two free websites with the starter pack or unlimited websites with premium. And training to show you how to build you site (which can be done in 30 seconds) and then most importantly how to drive customers to your site. You can be a novice or an expert and the information will suit you. The training is so comprehensive you are sure to make money for your business. The best I can suggest is that you try it out for free and see how you go!

I am a male, but I can imagine what it would be to have small children or a baby that need you most of the day. I have seen some of the part time jobs you mentioned on the internet and I understand that it might be tough trying to find work if you are smart and want to work but want to still have time for your family. I had a look around your site and you suggest an interesting option that I see at Wealthy Affiliate. I am going to have a further look into it on your advice? Would you say its more of a part time income or could I live off it?

    • Ruth Maisey says:

Absolutely!. It all depends on how much work you put in. Wealthy Affiliate is not a get rich scam, if you work hard you can more than a full time income on it. Good luck and any more quesitons please let me know.

Thank you for this article, I found it most informative. And I can identify with it as I was am too a mum trying to get back into work. It’s so hard because you want to do something you enjoy but fits around the kids, and to find these two things together is impossible. I am still searching. I will have a look into your review you mention below, maybe there is something here as I think you understand my predicament!

  9. Lucinda Freestone says:

    Dear Ruth

Interesting article on mothers working from home.

I have never been a mother but realise how difficult it must be to go back to work when you have children.

I have also found it hard to get normal 9 to 5 jobs now because I am 65. Same thing really I suppose.

I once gave Amway a go trying to make extra money and I ended up spending more than I earned as I had to buy all their products. I also did not like the idea of trying to sell it to my friends and family so I didn’t!! It was definitely not my best career choice.

WA definitely is the best way

    • Ruth Maisey says:

That’s good to know Lucinda. My parents too tried and tried Amway and had a similar experience to you. Thanks for your comments and good luck to you
