3 best printers for a small business – get yourself set up

brother MFC J5720DW review

You used to be able to get away with not having a printer. But now, that’s not possible.

Printers are essential. These days, they do a lot more than just print and they are really affordable. As a small home business owner you should think about getting an all in one – which means, it prints, scans and photocopies.

My reviews will give you my top three best printers for a small business, and what you need will depend on your requirements. If you are using a printer just to have a hard copy of some files, or for invoicing and the odd colour image, you will need something different than if you want high quality, photo like imagery.

There are plenty out there, so I have chose my favourite 3 to give you a range, these range from the cheapest first to the most expensive. But none of these are particularly expensive, as I don’t believe you need to spend a lot to get a great printer. Make sure to click through to the full reviews.

Great blog. I like that you picked three main printers to discuss as part of your blog.

You are correct in that there are so many different printers and models out there you could research for weeks and possibly still not make a decision.

Narrowing it down to three let me see the functions of each and allowed me to make a decision after taking a look at each review that you provided on each printer.

Having different price ranges also helps. If you are on a tight budget you provided a printer that fits well into that. If your budget is a little more flexible then you also provided a printer that can offer higher quality and additional functions.

Thanks for your comments Ron, I appreciate them. That was my plan was to still keep them affordable within the remit of a small or home business as you can spend a fortune on these things which may not be necessary. Good luck in your purchase!

    Hi Ruth:

These are great printers for operating a small online business. I personally have the HP DeskJet 2540 which is very similar to the HP DeskJet 1512 series. The printers are identical. What I like about the HP DeskJet 2540 series is that it is a Wi-Fi printer which means I can be using the home Wi-Fi and send an invoice or document to be printed.

What I currently struggle with is finding discount toner cartridges. Do you have any recommendations on where the best place is to shop for inexpensive printer ink?

Thank you for your review of three great printers.

      Hi Stephanie

Thank you for your comments. In terms of discount ink cartridges, I would suggest purchasing from Amazon as they have all the range you would need for any of these printers, and they are easy to return.

See the below links for the relevant discount inks

I hope that helps. Let me know if you need any more information!

    • Ruth says:

Yes of course. You can get them very cheaply from amazon which is great because they are easy to reorder or return. Have a look at this page about toner cartidges and you can see the selection available.

I am looking for a home printer and this page is really well written and informative. I had no idea where to start to look for a printer, so this has really helped me to get started. I don’t want to spend too much and it’s har dto know what to choose. Thank you, i have some ideas now.

    Hi Ruth,

thank you for this great post – I have had this dilemma for a while now. My parents have the HP Deskjet which I know is very good but when you’re overwhelmed with so many choices it can be difficult. I like your reviews as they are specifically for people like me with small home businesses and my needs for printing etc are very basic for my daily admin (everything else like advertising etc I have done at the printers). I will definitely be bookmarking this page and using it to order my printer. Thank you again 🙂

    • Ruth says:

Glad to help Holly. I know that people who work from home don’t need anything too fancy and don’t want to spend all their profits on a printer, so that is why I have selected these three. Good luck with your business!

    Hi there,

I’ve alway been a big fan of earlier models the HP Deskjet. In my opinion, it is very affordable and the quality is more than good enough if printing, copying and faxing is not your main purpose of business. I do have a question, which one is the most economical? By which I mean uses the least amount of ink and electricity.

    • Ruth says:

This would be the most expensive option. THe Brother model that I have outlined. This is probably because you are paying that little bit extra, but it is set up more for colour print that the others. I hope that helps

Informative page. well since many of us are wanting to start small businesses, definately could be useful for keeping track of information, printing invoices and other things. I haven’t had the best of luck of printers, hopefully I could afford the money for one. I would typically prefer colored, I’ve always been into the colored type.
